About Dr. Major

Dr. Michael Major

Some would say Dr. Michael Major was destined to become an orthodontic specialist. The son of an orthodontist and academic leader, Dr. Major has always been captivated by how orthodontics changes peoples’ lives. And now he’s brought equal parts passion and remarkable vision to Verve. His unique way of seeing things not only helps him create healthy, beautiful smiles but seems to inspire a lot of smiling in the process.

His distinctions include earning his Bachelor of Science (with honors) from the University of Alberta and his DMD from the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Afterward he completed a dental residency at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver General Hospital, and a specialty graduate degree (MSc) in Orthodontics from the University of Alberta to become a certified specialist in Orthodontics (FRCDc). Dr. Major was born and raised in Edmonton and loves the fact that he can now raise his children here as well. A divorced but dedicated father of four,

Dr Major endures the same challenges we all face in creating balance, appreciates the deep significance of family, and knows the importance of a smile that only comes from the inside. It’s the skills and attitudes of optimism and gratitude learned in through his personal trials that he brings to Verve every day.

When he’s not busy helping people live with Verve, you’ll see him out doing all the family activities every dad enjoys… and those that feel more like a chore as well 🙂

Treatment Options

Early Interceptive Treatment

An orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, but the best time for an initial orthodontic evaluation is at the age of 7.  While many children are not ready for treatment at 7, an orthodontist can see the patterns of development and give parents a sense of what to expect in the coming years.

You see, by the age of 7 most children have many of their first adult teeth erupting.  During this time the bite and jaw relationships are being established, laying the foundation for jaw function and ultimately for their smile.

Early treatment can:

  • Create room for unerupted or crowded teeth
  • Create facial balance by addressing jaw growth
  • Reduce the risk of fracture of protruding teeth
  • Reduce treatment time with braces

Sometimes Dr Major will recommend early treatment to correct small problems before they become big problems.  Other times he will recommend monitoring over a period of months or years.

Either way, you will leave with a better understanding of what to expect with your child.  This gives you and your child an opportunity to start orthodontic treatment at an optimal time – whether now or in the future.

If your child is over age 6 and hasn’t yet looked at by an orthodontist, make the call to schedule an exam with Dr. Major.  We make the process easy and fun.  An the final outcome is better outcomes and simpler treatment in adolescents.  And God only knows, we need something that’s simple with our teenagers!

Adolescent Treatment

Between the age of 11 and 15 is when we really roll up our sleeves and get to work.  That’s because at this time, all the baby teeth have been lost and the adult teeth have erupted.

During adolescent treatment any remaining open spaces can close, crowding can be managed, misaligned teeth can be fixed, and remaining bite issues correct.  Basically, we your child’s smile is set up for life.

This is a time when self-esteem related to appearance becomes very important, so braces are often a welcome addition. This age group is very receptive to wearing braces. They love being part of the crowd, showing off their style with colored ties on their braces and elastics. This connection with others in treatment, can also serve to motivate the child to control their habits including eating brace friendly foods, wearing elastics and oral hygiene.

This is when you can give your child the gift of a smile that will last a lifetime.

Adult Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is not just for kids anymore! It can have life-changing results at any age!

Many adults did not have the opportunity for orthodontic care as a child. But it’s never too late to have the smile and the healthy mouth you deserve, and the advantages it provides.

With the state of the art orthodontic treatment options that are offered at Verve, you can have orthodontic treatment that is faster, more esthetic, more efficient, requires fewer appointments, and is more comfortable than ever before.

Each person is different, so we offer a number of options to suit your needs and your lifestyle. From traditional braces, to clear braces, to invisalign, there are a number of possibilities.

Call today to schedule a complete orthodontic evaluation with Dr. Major and you can start on the road to Live, Laugh and Smile more.

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder where a person doesn’t get enough oxygen while they sleep.  Maybe they even stop breathing entirely.  Sometimes hundreds of times. The person is literally suffocating in their sleep.

Sleep apnea can happen at any age – both with children and adults.  However, the cause is usually different, and therefore the treatment is often different.

In children symptoms usually show up as snoring, sleepiness, ADHD, bed wetting, or behavioral problems.  Asthma, allergies, tonsils, adenoids, and facial growth problems with the jaws and bite are major factors causing sleep apnea in kids.

Managing sleep apnea in children can be complex, and often requires a team of professionals.  In addition to pediatric ENT and Pulminologists, an specific and targeted orthodontics is important for treating many childhood sleep problems.  Timely childhood orthodontics may also play a preventative role for developing sleep apnea later in life as an adult.

In adults, when you sleep the muscles in your throat usually relax and narrow in the airway.  For most people is not a problem. But some who have contributing factors such as age, excess weight, being male, or having a small jaw this narrowing can cause a reduction or cessation of airflow.

Dr. Major regularly works with physicians helping both children and adults manage their sleep apnea.

Braces

Did you know that the first braces were invented in 1728? They consisted of a flat strip of metal that was connected to the teeth by pieces of thread.

We’ve come a long way since then. In fact, orthodontic technology is constantly changing. The options available today are vastly improved – and so is the experience of having braces. Below are just some of the new options available from Dr. Major:

Metal Braces: These are the more traditional appliances with new high-tech engineering. The metal orthodontic braces used by Dr. Major are designed to move your teeth in very specific ways gently and efficiently.

Clear / tooth colored braces: These braces are a less visible option for those who want a more discrete look.

Today’s technology is gentler, less painful, and more efficient than even 30 years ago (when all of us “old fart” parents were kids). Meaning the experience of braces can be fun, and even a personal expression of style.

Invisalign

Invisalign uses high-tech, 3-D computer models of your teeth along with the treatment plan of Orthodontist Dr. Major to create a series of aligners to move your teeth into the correct position.

Invisalign aligners give you the ultimate freedom. Freedom to eat whatever you want, freedom to brush and floss normally – and freedom to go through treatment without anyone knowing.

Plus, you can even take the aligners out when needed! Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are great solutions for many people, and Dr. Major and his team have created beautiful smiles for hundreds of people in the area who wanted a comfortable and esthetic way to straighten their teeth.

Getting Started

The path to a Verve Smile starts with an initial consultation.
