According to the Emailing Personal Identifiable Health Information procedure by the PIPEDA, “Transferring personal identifiable health information by email carries significant risks including but not limited to breach of privacy, authentication of the recipient, delay delivering the information to the recipient, or delay with the recipient receiving the information, and delays in documenting the content on the health record.”

The email should contain the least amount of information.
AHS employees must use email encryption and Information Technology (IT) security processes before transmitting personal identifiable health information to an external email account.
Email transmission of personal identifiable health information must be done only with the patient’s permission.
